The single most common dispute between homeowners, roofers, and insurance companies is this: is this damage from a storm, or is it just an old roof? Here's how the professionals tell the difference.
Hail damage to asphalt shingles creates a distinct pattern:
Key diagnostic: hail hits everything equally. If you have hail damage on the roof, you'll also find dents on soft metal โ gutters, downspouts, AC fins, window screens. No dents on metal = probably not hail.
Insurance adjusters will factor age into their assessment. A 10-year-old shingle damaged by hail is a full claim. A 22-year-old shingle with the same appearance may be considered "age-deteriorated" โ and only partially covered or denied.
This is why timing matters. If you had a hail storm last spring and you're just now getting the roof inspected, the damage is harder to attribute definitively to that storm.
Inspect after every significant storm. If you had hail in your area (apps like Hail Trace or iRoofing track historical storm data by address), call for a free inspection within 30 days. The sooner you document it, the cleaner the insurance claim.
